Mixed martial arts fighter Jason “Mayhem” Miller was arrested on multiple charges after police were called to a disturbance at the White House restaurant Saturday, March 7.

The restaurant’s usual crowd included boxing fans and mixed martial arts fighters, invited by Tom Atencio to see a live boxing bout broadcast. The restaurant employee and former fight promoter was promoting the kick off of a new clothing line, Lions to Lambs.

Event promoter Jon Shakill says Miller was not one of the special guests, but he definitely kicked the event to another level.

When police were summoned about 11:30 p.m. for a disturbance inside the bar, Miller fled out the front entrance, Sgt. Tim Kleiser said. As officers attempted to contact him, he reversed direction and ran south into a group of waiting officers who tried to grab him. Miller resisted efforts by police to restrain him before a large crowd.

When four officers did eventually detain him, Miller continued to kick and spit at them, behavior that continued inside the police cruiser as well, Kleiser said.

Miller was ultimately transported to Orange County Jail for resisting arrest, battery on a police officer, and unlawful fighting, Kleiser said. No officers were injured.

Pursuit Ends in Arrest of Burglary Suspects

Three Los Angeles residents suspected in a Newport Beach burglary were arrested after a brief pursuit through Laguna Canyon that ended Wednesday, March 25, when the suspect’s car collided with another outbound car near El Toro Road. No one was injured in the wreckage, authorities said.

Laguna Beach police Sgt. Tim Kleiser said a Laguna officer spotted a car near Forest Avenue at 2:28 p.m. that fit the description of a broadcast made minutes earlier by Newport police about suspects who had fled when a home burglary was interrupted.

When the motorist realized he was being followed, he ran a red light at Forest Avenue and failed to yield to the pursuing officer along Laguna Canyon Road, which was free-flowing at the time, Kleiser said. The fleeing Kia reached speeds of 70 mph, he said.

Eyewitness Kenn Robillard, who was inbound at the time, disputed that account and said the pursuit took place in the middle turning lane. “The traffic was heavy and slow in this area,” said Robillard, who questioned the value and public safety of 10 other pursuing police cars.

The driver bailed out of the car after the collision, but was spotted hiding in bushes from a helicopter and taken into custody along with two others who remained in the vehicle, Newport Beach police spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella said.

She identified the people taken into custody as Hugo Fernando Gonzalez, 21; Evelyn Yvette Gudino, 26; and Anthony Vargas, 21, all of Los Angeles.

The incident began at 2:17 p.m. when a resident in the 200 block of Evening Canyon Road returned home and surprised two men inside, who fled in a white Kia, Manzella said.

Police recovered property, presumably from other victims, in the car, said Manzella.

Fire Consumes Studio Apartment

Fire investigators have yet to determine the cause of a blaze that caused $50,000 in damage to a ground-level studio apartment in the 1800 block of S. Coast Highway last week, fire officials said.

The occupant came home about 10:23 p.m. Thursday, March 19, and found her apartment ablaze, fire Chief Jeff LaTendresse said. “She was able to get her cat out of the apartment and both were uninjured,” he said.

Four engines and two trucks from the Laguna and Newport Beach departments doused the fire, said LaTendresse, which also destroyed the contents valued at $10,000.

The fire broke out in the kitchen and properties nearby were evacuated, the police department log said.

Federal investigators and detectives from the Beverly, Mass., police department are investigating the disappearance of Chinese jade from a shipment of antique furniture valued at $5 million that left Laguna Beach in December, law enforcement officials said this week.

The load of personal furniture was shipped by a Laguna resident to Boston by truck and consigned to an auction house for sale, said a Beverly detective, who declined to be identified. “He’s just missing a few items, not the whole load,” said the detective, who could not put a value on the missing items alone.

The vehicle was described as a light-colored four-door sedan, possibly a Toyota or Nissan Altima, said Sgt. Tim Kleiser.

The vehicle was traveling northbound and the side mirror on the driver’s side struck the pedestrian, on foot near Calliope Street, Kleiser said. Police did not locate the vehicle.

The uninhibited rider stepped off at Diamond Street before authorities arrived.

Laguna Canyon Road reopened at 3 a.m. today after a 10-hour closure due to emergency repairs by utility crews to replace a toppled telephone pole, police said Tuesday.

A telephone pole, sheered off in the 2700 block when hit by a car, toppled across the road and struck an outbound vehicle, Sgt. Tim Kleiser said. Neither motorist was injured, he said.

“That person’s lucky,” said Kleiser, noting that the pole snapped at its base, bringing down phone and cable wires.

Though police closed the road between Canyon Acres Drive and El Toro Road, residents who live along the canyon were allowed to drive to their homes, Kleiser said.

An allegedly drunk driver collided with three other cars while leading police on a high-speed, nearly eight mile chase last Saturday, May 16, through downtown and Laguna Canyon.

Alan Terrazas, 41, of Aliso Viejo, only yielded to police after his own car was disabled when he rear-ended a car on El Toro Road, police Sgt. Tim Kleiser said.

Despite wrecking two other cars between Boat Canyon and Aliso Creek Road, there were no major injuries reported as a result of the pursuit although one of the traffic accident victims was transported to the hospital, Kleiser said.

Two six-pack carriers were found in the car driven by Terrazas, who was arrested for suspicion of felony evading, hit and run and DUI, Kleiser said.

An officer spotted Terrazas’ car near downtown about 4:40 p.m. and pursued it out the canyon, where it hit another vehicle near Sun Valley Road and reached speeds of 88 mph, Kleiser said.

CHP and sheriff’s deputies were notified of the vehicle heading their direction and six officers conducted a high-risk vehicle stop, Kleiser said, where weapons are drawn.

Police Roll Out Holiday Checkpoint

Police will be conducting a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint at an undisclosed location within the city limits and special patrols over Memorial Day weekend.

The checkpoint is set for Sunday, May 24, from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. while patrols start Friday, May 22.

A checkpoint is effective at lowering DUI-related fatalities and injuries, Lt. Jeff Calvert said in a statement. If you are planning a party with alcohol included, plan ahead and designate a non-drinking sober driver, he said.

Ex-Pro Surfer Held for Suspicion of Drug Dealing

A retired professional surfer and co-founder of the Gotcha surfwear brand was arrested for suspicion of drug dealing after Laguna Beach police seized $2,000 worth of cocaine in his home last week, police said Monday, June 22.

Police charged Michael Elliot Tomson, 60, of Laguna Beach, with felony possession of narcotics for sale after conducting a 7 a.m. probation check at his home in the 21000 block of Mar Vista Avenue. A scale, baggies used to package cocaine for sale and 52 grams of cocaine were seized, said Sgt. Tim Kleiser, who provided the street value estimate.

While the new charges carry a $25,000 bail, Tomson’s probation officer placed a hold on him due to the new arrest, Kleiser said. Nevertheless, Tomson posted bond and was released early June 19, jail records show.

In 2013, Tomson was charged with two felony DUI counts, and suspicion of cocaine possession, following an early-morning traffic accident in Laguna Beach. Court records show Tomson has had numerous run-ins with law enforcement beginning in 2010.

A native of Durban, South Africa, Tomson finished fifth in the debut world pro surfing championship of 1976, says the Encyclopedia of Surfing. Two years later, Tomson emigrated to the U.S., moving to Laguna Beach, where he co-founded Gotcha in 1978 with Joel Cooper, selling swimming trunks from a Laguna Beach garage. The pioneering Southern California surf wear company transformed a cottage industry with edgy design and would become a dominant player in the market.

“Gotcha was a risk taking idea factory, a creative foundry that took gambles and broke rules. It created a blueprint that action sports brands still follow and its designs, widely considered to be a creative benchmark, are still referenced throughout the industry today,” says Amazon.com’s summary of “Goin Big: Gotcha and the Evolution of Modern Surf Style,” author Kevin O’Sullivan’s 2008 book.

Known for its flashy board short designs and aggressive marketing, Gotcha’s sales topped $65 million by 1987.

But when the wave crumbled by the mid-’90s, Gotcha’s founders in 1997 sold the company, now a Perry Ellis division that licenses the Gotcha brand that is sold in retailers such as Sears and Kmart.

Tomson served as the second president of the Surf Industry Manufacturers Association, based in Dana Point, from 1990 to 1999.

Lightning Strike Ignites a Tree Blaze

Lightning struck a tree that caught fire in the Temple Terrace area during this past Tuesday’s unexpected afternoon thunderstorm.

Four fire engines spent several minutes dousing a palm tree in the 2000 block of San Remo Drive to prevent the blaze from spreading to homes along the densely developed block, fire Chief Jeff LaTendresse said. “The fire was quickly extinguished and did not spread to any structures,” he said.

One resident nearby described the lightning strike as the loudest sound they’ve ever heard.
