By Andrea Adelson | LB Indy

Vehicles southbound on Coast Highway in Laguna Beach struck pedestrians in crosswalks in separate incidents this past Friday and Saturday, Dec. 5 and 6, police said.

Due to the severity of the injuries in Saturday’s 7:15 p.m. accident at Calliope Street, police closed Coast Highway in both directions between Bluebird Canyon Drive and Mountain Street for nearly four hours to investigate, Capt. Jason Kravetz said.

So far in 2014, 28 people on foot sustained injuries in Laguna Beach in accidents involving cars and five others have died, including two fatalities of pedestrians and a third on a bicycle, a significant increase compared to 2012, according to police statistics. That year – with one fatality and 19 accidents involving cars and pedestrians – earned Laguna the distinction as the most dangerous of the state’s small cities for people on foot, according to an Office of Traffic Safety ranking.

In the more severe of the two accidents this past weekend, two women both suffered broken bones when struck by a Cadillac SUV being driven by a 71-year-old Laguna Niguel man, Kravetz said. The pedestrians, a 60-year-old Mission Viejo woman and her 56-year-old companion from Santa Monica, were attempting to cross from the inland side of Coast Highway at Calliope in a marked crosswalk, but one which lacks pedestrian activated flashing lights.

No alcohol or drugs were involved and the driver was not arrested, though the investigation is continuing, Kravetz said.

In Friday’s accident, a 20-year-old Anaheim man suffered a broken right leg after he stepped off the curb at Cleo Street and was struck by a rear side mirror of a passing car, Kravetz said.

The motorist, a 58-year-old Laguna Beach woman, was found at fault for running a red light, he said.

Police at a DUI checkpoint in North Laguna screened nearly 1,000 vehicles this past weekend, which resulted in seven arrests, including three drivers suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Another 15 drivers were cited for license suspensions, four people were arrested on other criminal charges and 14 citations were issued, said a statement by Lieutenant Jeff Calvert.

The checkpoint was set up at North Coast Highway and Crescent Bay Drive after 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20. Over the next five hours, 990 vehicles were screened. Police say the driver of a taxi cab with extensive front end damage was arrested in Laguna Beach early on New Year’s Day, a suspect in a hit and run collision that fatally injured a Valencia man in his 20s in Newport Beach.

The Orange County Coroner identified the victim as Travis Marton.

The suspect, Ronald Lloyd Aviles, 56, of San Clemente, was arrested for felony hit and run and booked at the Newport Beach Police Department, Laguna Beach police Capt. Jason Kravetz said in a statement. Alcohol does not appear to be a contributing factor, Kravetz said.

The circumstances of the collision are still under investigation, but police say Newport dispatchers received a report about a person lying in the road on East Coast Highway at Newport Coast Drive about 3 a.m.

Within 10 minutes of an alert being issued to nearby law enforcement agencies about a hit and run, a Laguna Beach officer came across a yellow cab van in the downtown area, which had extensive front end damage, Kravetz said. The driver was pulled over and detained for further investigation and Newport officers responded to the scene and ended up arresting the man for the hit and run death of the pedestrian, Kravetz said.

Bail for Aviles was set at $50,000.

Newport Police Investigator Bill Hume seeks the public’s assistance with information about the collision. Contact him at 949-644-3746 or whume@nbpd.org.

Laguna Beach police urge football fans to take sides this Sunday whether they are Seahawk or Patriot fans and decide whether to drink or drive.

Police will be deploying on Sunday, Feb. 1, to stop and arrest alcohol and drug-impaired drivers.

“Drunk driving is completely preventable,” said Lt. Jeff Calvert. “All it takes is a little planning. We want fans to remember that it’s a choice. Drink or drive, but never do both.”

For those who plan to drink, leave your keys at home. Designate a friend as a sober driver or use public transportation, Calvert said.

Firefighters Contain Deck Blaze

Six people fled a home on Rockledge Road about 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 22 when fire erupted on an outdoor deck, fire officials said.

Firefighters had difficulty accessing the burning deck of the three-level, 16,000 square foot house, which was undamaged by the blaze, he said.
