Two pedestrians crossing Coast Highway in a South Laguna crosswalk suffered minor injuries after being sideswiped by a car Wednesday, July 8.

The 11:34 p.m. accident occurred in the crosswalk at Coast Highway and Eagle Rock Way, said Sgt. Tim Kleiser.

The two on foot were visiting from China; one suffered minor cuts to the arm and the other had a possible broken toe, Kleiser said. The vehicle has not been found, he said.

Three children found unattended on Main Beach about 4 p.m. Sunday, July 12, led to the arrest of their parents, suspected of neglect. Police allege the mother was in a restroom using drugs while the kids played on the beach; she was arrested for suspicion of being under the influence, Sgt. Tim Kleiser said.

The children, ages 6, 8 and 10, were all taken to Orangewood Children’s Home and Child Protective Services was notified, Kleiser said.

The mother, Julie Black, 46, of San Dimas, reported the children missing two hours after police transported them to the police station, where they were provided with dinner, Kleiser said. “She was instructed to come to the Police Department and showed up with the children’s father,” which Kleiser identified as Leeroy Richard Black, 55, also of San Dimas.

“Security officers at the Marine Room had to assist the police officers in preventing others from approaching the officers while they were trying to legally detain two people,” Kleiser said.

Green, a grade-school teacher, posted $1 million bond on Feb. 27 and entered a not guilty plea on March 10, according to court records.

Local police patrolled the pubs on foot Saturday, Aug. 29, making pit stops at eight Laguna Beach establishments that serve alcoholic beverages. They weren’t bending the elbow on the job however. They were talking to about a 100 patrons who were, according to Lt. Jeff Calvert.

Their intent was to educate drinkers about the science behind imbibing and its affects. Of 66 customers who volunteered to take breath tests, four persons were over .08%, including two individuals who were over twice the legal limit, Calvert said in a statement. Rather than getting arrested, cops handed out Uber vouchers and a card that lists the DUI penalties they could face if they are caught driving while impaired.

“We’re trying to educate people to make the right decision before they attempt to drive a motor vehicle,” Calvert said. “The goal is to keep the roadways safe, with a target of getting people off the road before they even get into their cars.”

A break-in at a specialty jeans store in downtown Laguna Beach early Monday, Oct. 12 has police detectives on the hunt for thieves with a discerning eye.

Officers who responded to a 3 a.m. alarm in the 200 block of Forest Avenue found a broken glass door at Robin’s Jeans and believe suspects had taken several items of clothing. Inventory at the shop includes men’s jeans with embellished back pockets. They range in price from $299 to $949 for ones with Prague crystals.

Police say a surveillance camera captured images of four people near the store.

The police log notes that a witness described a possible getaway car and the CHP finding a car matching that description abandoned on the 73 freeway.

Sgt. Tim Kleiser says the value of the merchandise stolen was not yet known. He did not describe the contents of the car, which was towed to Laguna Beach for investigation.

Police Arrest Four in Gift-Card Scheme

Store clerks suspicious of shoppers who repeatedly purchased high-dollar amount gift cards in a local market led to the arrest of three people in Laguna Beach and a fourth in North Hollywood last week, suspect in a conspiracy using stolen credit cards to commit theft and burglary, police said.

Police recovered 49 Apple gift cards worth $19,000 in the vehicle used by three of the suspects and $9,000 in cash from a hotel room in North Hollywood where a suspected accessory was arrested, Sgt. Tim Kleiser said. “We’re glad the grocery store called us.”

Kleiser explained how the con works: Crooks use fraudulent credit cards to purchase gift cards until the issuer inactivates them. Then thieves redeem the gift cards for merchandise, such as a $400 iPhone, which is later returned to the store for cash.

One of the fraudulent cards belonged to a resident of Turkey, said Kleiser.

Store clerks called police about 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, when the suspects made repeated purchases at the register, said Kleiser. Detectives found receipts from three different markets in their car as well as several fraudulent credit cards and six grams of pot, he said.

In Laguna, police arrested Mekka Thibedeaux-Harris, 21, of Compton, along with David Dorismond and Barrington Wright, both 20, of Brooklyn, N.Y., charging each with burglary, theft and conspiracy, Kleiser said.
