Updated: Teens Suspected of Smoking Heroin

Police arrested two Laguna Beach High School teens for suspicion of felony narcotics possession after school officials allegedly caught them smoking heroin in a campus restroom about 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12, police said.

Police seized .31 grams of heroin in a jacket pocket, searched as part of the officer’s investigation, Sgt. Louise Callus said.

The amount, reported by police initially as 13 grams, apparently caused an uproar among parents, who inferred dealers were selling heroin on campus, said principal Joanne Culverhouse, who asked police to clarify the amount that was seized.

“I can only imagine how alarming this incident must be for you as parents, as it is for me and my staff,” Culverhouse said in a letter to parents, released on Tuesday, Nov. 19. “I encourage you to speak to your children regarding this incident and instill the severe impact that drugs and alcohol can have on their lives,” she said.

The unidentified 16- and 17-year-old girls, initially detained by school officials, were arrested and released to their parents, said Callus.

The girls were discovered after a teacher called the office when one student did not return to the classroom in a timely manner, Culverhouse said. A campus supervisor found the pair smoking heroin in a restroom stall, she said.

Local arrests involving heroin aren’t all that unusual, Callus said. “It’s still a mixed bag of meth, heroin, scripts, and alcohol,” she said.
