Belly Dancers Tangle in Post-Parade Brawl

Patrons of Laguna Beach’s Marine Room got more than the usual performance last Saturday by bagpipers, an entrant in the Patriots Day Parade who stopped by after the community event to play for tips.

This year, they were clearly upstaged by two other parade entrants, members of the belly dancing troupe JJ and the Habibis, who, still in their cleavage-baring, jangling costumes, got into a brawl on the sidewalk after a shoving match on the dance floor, said general manager Agnes Dougherty

“Hair and veils were flying,” said Dougherty, who said co-manager Robby Boyd vaulted over the bar to “break up the cat fight.” “There were no wardrobe malfunctions,” she added.

The dance students involved had irritated each other in the parking lot before the parade began, said troupe leader Jheri St. James. The two went to the Mar Bar separately, and an argument about a purse escalated with verbal taunts, a push, a fracas and one woman possibly suffering a detached retina, St. James said.

“There are still lots of legal words flying around on the part of the injured party who is married to a lawyer, ‘felony assault, for example,” St. James said.

Ultimately, the victim did not want prosecution, according to the police log.

Former astronaut Mark Kelly, the husband of former Arizona Rep. Gabriel Giffords, pulled away his daughter’s dog that had attacked a sea lion pup last Saturday, March 23, on Goff Island Beach below Laguna Beach’s Montage resort.

Onlookers attempted to distract the 65-pound American pit bull mix by hitting it with a stick, according to the police log.

The dog had broken free from its 18-year-old owner, Kelly’s daughter, and attacked the seal, which had already been removed from Aliso Creek earlier in the day because it was beaching itself, Sgt. Louis Callus said. The seal died from its injuries.

Kelly and Giffords, who in 2011 survived an assassination attempt that injured 13 people where six others were killed, were guests of residents near the resort, Callus said.

Canyon Collision Claims Two Lives

Two people died and a third suffered minor injuries in a head-on collision that resulted in the closure of Laguna Canyon Road throughout the morning of Tuesday, April 2, police said.

The coroner’s office identified the victims as Alberto Casique-Salinas, 47, of Anaheim, who was driving the vehicle and his passenger, Armando Garcia-Gonzales, 38, of Santa Ana.

The preliminary investigation indicated that the solo driver of a Tesla driving outbound veered for an unknown reason into oncoming traffic, police Sgt. Louise Callus said.

The victims were occupants of a Honda Accord, which was severely damaged and scattered debris across lanes, police said. The driver of the Tesla was transported for treatment to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo.

Details about the cause of the 6:43 a.m. collision, which occurred between El Toro Road and state Highway 73, are still under investigation, said Callus.

Owners of Coast Highway Laundromat and Legion Laundromat were both victims of a telephone scam by a caller demanding payment for past due bills and threatening to disconnect electric service, police said.

The Coast Highway Laundromat owner turned over $898 on Tuesday, March 26, according to the police log. “We have since learned that Legion Laundromat was also a victim of this scam,” Sgt. Louise Callus said.

If a caller refuses to provide their name, department and business number, terminate the call, advised Henry Martinez, SCE’s vice president of safety and security, adding that SCE employees will never ask for money in person.

An assault involving three men escalated into a struggle with Laguna Beach police, who ultimately deployed a taser twice to subdue the younger combative suspect in the 300 block of Cozumel around 1:15 a.m. Friday, May 10, police said.

Police ultimately arrested Laguna Beach resident Sergio Gabriel Borgognone, 51, for allegedly resisting arrest and his son Cory, 25, of Norco, also for resisting arrest as well as suspicion of felony assault, Sgt. Louise Callus said. Both were both taken to the hospital for evaluation; the father refused treatment, she said.

The father’s roommate, who suffered a laceration to his head during an alleged assault by Cory Borgognone, called police and told them the son had also assaulted his father, Callus said. The father and son, who were both inebriated, failed to comply with orders by the investigating officers, who first cuffed the father. The son, placed on the ground, hit one officer in the face and was tased twice before he was handcuffed, she said.

Public’s Help Needed in Nabbing Burglary Suspects

Laguna Beach police released video images from two separate break-ins at local businesses in recent weeks hoping for the public’s help in identifying the suspects, but have yet to receive any leads, Sgt. Louise Callus said Tuesday.

More than $8,000 worth of tools and other items were taken in a midnight burglary at Ganahl Lumber, 1765 Laguna Canyon Rd., on Thursday, May 23, Capt. Jason Kravetz said. Two suspects are seen on a video smashing the lower portion of a glass door at Ganahl, he said. They wore hoodies over their heads as they entered the business.

Earlier, thieves shattered a front window at European Optical, 1276 S. Coast Highway, on May 10, setting off an alarm, he said. Police arrived to find window shards and several pairs of eyewear strewn about the entryway. The loss was approximately 65 pairs of eyeglass frames valued at $13,000.

A video shows two suspects parking behind the optical store prior to the burglary, police said. One fetches a tool to break the window and his accomplice wraps something over his hand before punching the window.

Auto Thieves Target Porsches

About 40 Laguna Beach residents who own 1990’s era Porsches this week received a special delivery to their home from the police department: a crime alert bulletin suggesting that thieves are targeting their vehicles and how to avoid getting hit.

Two late-model sports cars, each worth at least $50,000 and equipped with alarms, disappeared overnight from residential streets in the last two months, Capt. Jason Kravetz said.

These late model Porsches are popular on the resale market and fetch more because of an air-cooled engine system, versus current models that are water-cooled, said Kravetz, recapping an explanation provided by one of the owners missing a Porsche.

Kravetz said he believes a few other thefts of similar models have occurred in south county cities, though he provided no details.

He said citizen volunteers delivered to Porsche owners the crime bulletins, which suggested they lock their cars, never leave them idling while unattended, to park in lit areas or use a garage, and to etch their vehicle identification number on windows and parts.

A 1996 Porsche 911 stolen worth $55,000 was stolen from the 900 block of Canyon View Drive on June 6 and a 1997 Porsche 993 valued at $50,000 was stolen from the 700 block of Nyes Place on July 10, police said. Kravetz said a regional auto theft task force was informed of the thefts, but he declined to say if a regional investigation is underway.
