La Sirena Grill in South Laguna closed for unexpected repairs this week after a motorist accidently rammed into the south side of the restaurant about 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26. No one was injured.

Officers spoke to the driver who also escaped injury and determined that neither alcohol nor drugs was a factor, Sgt. Tim Kleiser said. The initial investigation suggests the driver was attempting to park the vehicle, but pressed on the accelerator instead of the break, he said.

Due to the Oscar broadcast, the restaurant wasn’t as full as usual and the inside and outside tables where the car struck were unoccupied, said take-out specialist Ken Sutton, who was on duty Sunday.

“I’m pretty sure the driver got a take out order,” said Sutton, who also recalled running into a wall with order in hand trying to flee as the car in the handicapped spot jumped the curb. Its impact on an outside picnic table pushed in the side of the building, snapped the side door and bowed the windows.

Sutton said he watched the car go into reverse at a speed unsafe for a parking lot and hit another vehicle. “It easily could have taken out more,” he said.

Restaurant co-owner Scott Cortelessa, of Laguna Beach, hopes the closure is no more than a few days. Inspectors red-tagged the building, restricting public access. “It was a pretty severe crash,” he said. As yet, he doesn’t know the cost of repairs. Insurance adjustors are due today, Tuesday, Feb. 28, he said.

Two teens that abandoned their crashed and stolen car and evaded a police manhunt on the ground and from the air for six hours were eventually arrested by a patrol officer, who thought their description matched that of the get-aways, police said.

Their wet and dirty clothing tipped off the officer, who stopped the pair as they walked along Park Avenue about 7 a.m., Sunday, March 26, Lt. Tim Kleiser said.

Police arrested Alexander Lopez Tavira, 18, of Downey, suspected as the driver of a stolen Lexus that struck a patrol unit attempting to stop the wanted car as well as a delivery truck, Kleiser said.

Despite a helicopter assist, officers did not locate the others until the next morning, Kleiser said.

Braulio Jose Pulgarin, 18, of Whittier, who initially provided police with a false name, was wanted for a no bail warrant, Kleiser said.

The hit and runs occurred at Coast Highway near Broadway around midnight before the motorist in the stolen car took off and ultimately crashed on Park Avenue near Tahiti. Of the four occupants who fled on foot, officers detained two Whittier 15-year-olds that attempted to run from the scene.

Despite a helicopter assist, officers did not locate the others until the next morning, Kleiser said.

Braulio Jose Pulgarin, 18, of Whittier, who initially provided police with a false name, was wanted for a no bail warrant, Kleiser said.

The charges against Lopez-Tavera include assault with a deadly weapon, child endangerment, possession of a stolen vehicle and stolen property, hit and run, and evading a police officer.

Fire authority paramedics airlift an injured man from the beach this past Sunday, May 21. Photo by John thomas.

A 20-year-old Dana Point man injured in a fall while “slacklining” on Table Rock Beach in South Laguna was airlifted to medical aid Sunday, May 21, authorities said.

Unlike a rescue of an unconscious man in the same area last month where three helicopters circled, just a single helicopter responded to the medical aid call from the Laguna Beach fire department, Chief Jeff LaTendresse said. He was transported to a hospital in Mission Viejo, LaTendresse said.

An Orange County Fire Authority helicopter landed on the beach to extract the victim, who experienced back pain after tumbling from a line secured between a stairway and a drainage pipe, LaTendresse said. Fire personnel made the assessment that the victim’s moderate injuries required an extraction, he said.

Following an inquiry by law enforcement officials over the April 29 incident where helicopters from the sheriff’s department and OCFA responded, LaTendresse said sheriff’s deputies agreed not to “self-deploy” to incidents.

Police say they arrested a 28-year-old Laguna Beach man who earlier this month allegedly broke into the home of an ex-girlfriend that he had harassed with a barrage of threatening text messages.

Investigators obtained a confession from Gregory Murray, who was detained at his home in the 200 block of Cliff Drive about 4:30 p.m. Thursday, June 22, two weeks after the break-in, Sgt. James Cota said. Murray was charged with stalking, making criminal threats and burglary, he said.

Cota declined to specify the nature of the threats, 150 texts and emails described as “harassing” that started after a three-month relationship ended in 2015 and continued to as recently as March, Cota said.

Murray had a neck brace on when he was arrested, said Cota, declining to comment on his medical condition.

Assault Suspect Disputes Police Account

A 42-year-old woman who fit a witness description of a suspect in an assault was arrested about 8:53 p.m., Friday, June 23, for multiple charges, including resisting arrest, according to police.

The local resident claims police used excessive force during the arrest and that she was wrongfully arrested, disputing that she was involved with an assault. The woman asked not to be identified for fear it would harm her reputation in the cosmetic industry.

The woman said she was on foot walking home after buying cigarettes at a liquor store when stopped by police, who conducted a field sobriety test and then forcefully took her to the ground.

The way in which she was detained and handcuffed resulted in 17 bruises and a broken left finger, the woman said in an interview. She admitted to biting an officer who covered her nose and mouth with his hand. “I didn’t deserve what happened,” she said.

“Officers arrested the right person,” said Sgt. James Cota. The woman was identified by the person that she assaulted, he said.

“She chose to not stop when approached by an officer and was uncooperative during the contact,” said Cota.

An internal inquiry into the matter will be conducted, a routine department policy whenever force is used against someone or when an officer sustains an injury, Cota said.
