Lost hikers, who had wandered off Car Wreck trail in Wood and Aliso Canyon Wilderness Park, were extracted without injury by a Fire Authority helicopter about 9:49 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, authorities said.

Police and firefighters were dispatched to attempt to locate the three missing hikers, who called for help about 7:25 p.m. A sheriff’s helicopter equipped with infrared cameras was requested and located the hikers, but it lacked extraction capability, said Laguna Fire Chief Jeff LaTendresse. A second helicopter from the Fire Authority eventually hoisted them out, he said.

“It was dark, they were unfamiliar with the area, it was steep, and they were off of the trail,” said LaTendresse, noting that city personnel, who had to access the trail on foot in order to search for them, did not reach the hikers before they were lifted out.
