Two Laguna Beach police officers who were recertified in a CPR class early last Friday, March 21, put their skills to work in restoring a pulse to man who had fallen.
When Corporal Becky White and Officer James Gramer arrived two minutes after the 11:53 a.m. call from the 100 block of Cliff Drive, they found a 60-year-old male who wasn’t breathing and lacked a pulse after hitting his head, Capt. Jason Kravetz said.
The officers began two-person CPR, administered a shock with gear from their cars and resumed compressing the man’s heart and blowing air into his mouth. Within four minutes, the man regained a regular heartbeat and began breathing, Kravetz said.
Fire personnel arrived at 12:01 p.m. and took over care for the man, who was transported to Mission Hospital Laguna Beach and is expected to survive, Kravetz said.
Officers are required to obtain new CPR and first aid certifications every two years. White, on the force since 2008, and Gramer, on the job since 2011, had finished their class, administered by Sgt. John Falk, six hours earlier, Kravetz said.
