LBPD Awarded Traffic Education, Enforcement Grant
Laguna Beach Police Department received a $104,975 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) for a year-long enforcement and education program. The money will fund various activities intended to reduce deaths and injuries on California roads.
The grant-related activities are for the 2020 federal fiscal year, which runs from Oct. 1, 2019 to Sept. 30, 2020.
The funding from the OTS will be used for numerous programs, including:
- DUI/driver’s license checkpoints
- Patrols specifically looking for suspected alcohol and/or drug-impaired drivers
- Patrols targeting violations of California’s hands-free cell phone law
- Patrols targeting the primary causes of crashes
- Patrols specifically looking for seat belt and child safety seat violations
- Creating “Hot Sheets” identifying repeat DUI offenders
- Officer training to identify suspected impaired drivers and conduct sobriety tests
Saturday, Nov. 2
Traffic stop. 12:53 a.m. El Toro Road and Laguna Canyon Road. A 37-year-old Aliso Viejo man was arrested on suspicion of DUI and held for $2,500 bail.
Drunk driving. 1:46 a.m. Cleo Street and South Coast Highway. A 23-year-old San Clemente woman was arrested on suspicion of DUI and driving with a BAC of .08 or higher and held for $2,500 bail after reportedly rear-ending another driver. Prior to the arrest, police and fire personnel responded to a report of an injury traffic collision. Emergency personnel arrived and found that a Nissan Sentra had slowed to turn right into the Pacific Edge Hotel parking lot when it was rear-ended by a Jeep Cherokee, driven by the San Clemente woman. The impact caused the Nissan to strike a light pole and two parked cars. The driver of the Nissan and the driver of the Jeep were examined by medics and found to be uninjured. Northbound and southbound traffic was diverted to side streets for 45 minutes.
Trespassing. 2:20 p.m. 300 block of 3rd Street. A 48-year-old man was reportedly sleeping under the stairwell of a parking structure. He was arrested on suspicion of trespassing and held for $10,000 bail.
Friday, Nov. 1
Burglary. 4 p.m. 300 block of Loma Terrace. A resident reported a burglary from over the weekend—their garage was possibly left unlocked and items were taken, including five iPhones, three MacBooks, and two iPads. Total loss was more than $13,000.
Drunk driving. 6:44 p.m. Anita Street and Glenneyre Street. A 44-year-old Laguna Beach man was arrested on suspicion of DUI and held for $2,500 bail. The man reportedly hit another vehicle.
Traffic stop. 11:08 p.m. Phillips Street and Laguna Canyon Road. A 30-year-old Los Angeles man was arrested on suspicion of DUI and driving with a BAC of .08 or higher and held for $2,500 bail.
Traffic stop. 11:56 p.m. 300 block of Ocean Avenue. A Santa Ana man was arrested during a traffic stop for possession of meth for sale ($25,000 bail), illegal possession of prescription medication ($500 bail), and possession of drug paraphernalia ($500 bail).
