Domestic Violence Report-Turned-Standoff Ends in Arrest
A Laguna Beach man was arrested Monday, July 30, following a report of domestic violence that escalated into an hours-long standoff, according to Laguna Beach Police officials.
Just before 9 p.m. on July 30, officers were dispatched to a residence in the 400 block of Poplar Street for domestic violence report, Sgt. Jim Cota said in a press release. A woman at the residence stated that her husband had assaulted her and that there were five children who were still inside the home. She said there was a handgun inside their bedroom and that her husband had threatened to use it in the past.
“Officers attempted several times to speak with her husband, identified as Slade Carlton, but he refused to cooperate and exit the residence,” Cota said. “Out of an abundance of caution and concern for the safety of the children, additional resources were requested including detectives, two canines, an LBPD police drone, and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department SWAT team.”
Cota said after hours of negotiations with Carlton, he chose to walk out of the residence with the children and surrender to officers. Carlton was arrested for domestic violence, willful cruelty to a child and false imprisonment. He was transported to the Laguna Beach Police Department where he was booked and later transported to Orange County Jail.
Suspect in Laguna Robbery Apprehended in Newport
A San Bernardino man suspected of robbing a family along South Coast Highway on Saturday, July 28, was arrested without incident later that day in Newport Beach, according to authorities.
James Kelley was booked for robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, and reckless evading.
On July 28 just after 10 p.m., Kelley was walking in the 600 block of South Coast Highway when he approached a family who was walking in the same area, according to Sgt. Jim Cota. Kelly knocked the woman with in the group to the ground and took her purse. In an attempt to help his mother, the woman’s teenage son grabbed Kelley’s legs to stop him. The suspect then turned and struck the teenager in the head with a large metal flashlight.
Kelley fled the scene and the woman’s husband gave chase. When the husband caught up to him, Kelley also struck him on the head with the flashlight, resulting in a large gash. Kelley then entered a vehicle and accelerated in reverse toward the husband and a witness, narrowly missing them, and fled northbound on South Coast Highway.
“Shortly after, a Laguna Beach police officer located Kelley fleeing in his vehicle, and attempted to make a traffic stop, but Kelley failed to yield and a pursuit was initiated,” Cota said in a press release. “The pursuit continued into Newport Beach, where we were assisted by the Newport Beach Police Department who successfully deployed spike strips deflating all of the tires, and the vehicle rolled to a stop.”
Kelley was taken into custody, and the weapon and credit cards belonging to the victim were located in the car.
