Seatbelt Scofflaws Beware

Laguna Beach police will conduct seat belt enforcement operations in a local campaign to help lower traffic deaths. Besides special patrols, officers on routine patrol will also be looking for unrestrained drivers and passengers.

Safety statistics show that half of traffic deaths involve unrestrained occupants.

In Orange County, the ticket cost for an adult seat belt violation is $162, with penalties for not restraining a child at $465.

 

Monday, May 8

Foot patrol. 20600 Laguna Canyon Road. Noon. William Thoos, 46, of Oxnard, was cited for a Ventura assault warrant and released.

Auto vs. pedestrian. Third Street. 3 p.m. A juvenile who was struck by a car was determined to be at fault for crossing outside of a crosswalk.

Tuesday, May 9

Domestic violence. 1200 block Glenneyre St. Bynay Blasberg, 33, of Laguna Beach, was arrested for outstanding DUI warrants.

Wednesday, May 10

Brandishing weapon. 1800 block of Laguna Canyon Road. 9 a.m. Provoked by an argument, James Kenneth Bailey, 53, of Florida, allegedly threatened a person with a handgun, though it turned out to be an airsoft replica weapon, and was arrested for making threats.

Grand theft. 200 block Thalia St. 1 p.m. Thieves cut a cable and stole a $7,500 Santa Cruz bike locked in a rear parking lot.

Medical. Myrtle St. 5 p.m. Kiani Leigh Harriman, 18, of Laguna Beach, was arrested for suspicion of felony DUI causing injury after an intoxicated male passenger exited her vehicle and collapsed. He struck his head, according to a log entry. The youth was transported for treatment to Mission Hospital.

Sexual perversion. 300 block of Glenneyre St. An inquiry is underway over a man texting a teen inappropriately.

Thursday, May 11

Fraud. 5:25 p.m. Canyon Acres. A resident sent a prepaid $2,500 debit card to someone who identified themselves as an IRS representative.

DUI. 8:30 p.m. 31700 Coast Hwy. Christopher Ryan Parker, 28, of Indianapolis, was arrested for suspicion of DUI when his disabled vehicle lost a wheel in the street after colliding with two parked cars near Third Avenue.

Friday, May 12

Suspicious vehicle. El Toro Rd. 2:16 a.m. An 18-year-old Lake Forest man was cited for DUI.

Saturday, May 13

Vandalism. 900 block S. Coast Hwy. 12:15 a.m. Detectives are investigating $1,000 in damage done to a gate at a surf shop.

Traffic stop. 300 block of Park Ave. 1:46 a.m. A 26-year-old from Corona was cited for DUI.

Domestic violence. 1400 block of Hillcrest Dr. 11:11 a.m. A grandmother who called police about a boyfriend hitting her granddaughter resulted in the arrest of a 20-year-old Laguna Beach man for misdemeanor domestic violence.

Suspicious vehicle. Ledroit Street. 6:24 p.m. Police say they will seek charges against Anthony Brian Palusso, 32, of Lake Elsinore, for suspicion of mail theft after linking him to similar thefts countywide.

Disturbance. 1300 block of Circle Way. 10:15 p.m. In the wake of reports about seven people drinking alcohol in the cave, a 23-year-old Pomona man was arrested for a DUI warrant.

Sunday, May 14

Property. 30800 block of Coast Hwy. 2 p.m. A woman who said she left three rings valued at $60,000 in a restroom returned to find them gone.

Disturbance. 800 block of Glenneyre St. 6:25 p.m. Terry Sanders, 39, who allegedly was panhandling and refused to leave when asked, was arrested for three misdemeanor warrants.
