A 4 a.m. solo collision, where an allegedly drunken motorist plowed into a power pole, disrupted Laguna Canyon traffic Saturday, July 9, including the debut run of a special Laguna Beach-bound weekend bus service.
In the early morning hours, traffic was restricted to vehicles under 15-feet due to the low-hanging wires, but the road fully reopened by 11:30 a.m., police Sgt. Tim Kleiser said.
While the police log noted a motorist who fell asleep at the wheel, Kleiser said a 22-year-old Laguna Beach man, who escaped injury in the collision south of El Toro Road, was arrested for DUI.
Mayor Steve Dicterow, who rode out on the bus with City Manager John Pietig to pick up the inaugural passengers, told radio station KX 93.5 listeners that those aboard seemed unconcerned about the congestion, happy to arrive in town without the frustration of searching for a parking place.
Summer Breeze shuttle service into Laguna Beach departs every 30 minutes 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays from a parking lot off Laguna Canyon Road near Interstate 405 in Irvine.
