Cyclist Dies in Canyon Collision

A bicyclist was killed and his riding companion injured when a motorist hit the pair pedaling southbound on state Highway 133 near the Laguna Coast Wilderness Park nature center early this morning, Friday, June 28, authorities said.

The vehicle driven by a 25-year-old female driver from Irvine collided with the bicyclists for an undetermined reason, said CHP investigator E. Barnard, from the San Juan Capistrano office. The driver was not immediately arrested and alcohol is not suspected in the investigation, Barnard said.

Prosecutors have yet to determine if the driver will be charged, Sgt. Alan Jones said Tuesday.

James Waller, 53, of Mission Viejo, died at the scene, according to Barnard. His riding companion, a 48-year-old Fullerton man, was transported to Mission Viejo’s Mission Hospital, Barnard said.
