Fires Close Two Restaurants

Unrelated fires that investigators believe were accidental temporarily closed Mozambique restaurant on Saturday, June 1, and La Sirena Grill on Tuesday, June 4, fire fighters said.

The Mozambique fire was unrelated to renovations taking place at the restaurant and was in a place inaccessible to patrons or employees, said Battalion Chief Api Weinert, who estimated property losses at $10,000.

La Sirena chef Mitch Gillan said employees put out a blaze and evacuated patrons before the arrival of firefighters, who as in the Mozambique blaze, used axes to open up walls where electrical lines and heating ducts are routed.

The engine from a fire station behind Mozambique was the first of several to respond to the blaze, on the scene four seconds after its departure, Weinert said.
