Checkpoint Snags DUI Suspects

Six drivers suspected of inebriation and 11 others driving with restricted licenses were arrested at a Laguna Beach police checkpoint Sunday on Coast Highway, north of Wesley Drive.

More than 1,600 vehicles passed through the checkpoint over its six hours of operation beginning at 9 p.m. Sunday, May 24, Sgt. Tim Kleiser said.

The checkpoints serve as a deterrent to those who might drive drunk or drugged impaired and encourages everyone to use sober designated drivers, he said in a statement.

Monday, May 18

Vandalism. 30800 block of Coast Hwy. 7:14 a.m. Vehicles belonging to six guests were vandalized.

Burglary. 2800 block of Chateau Way. 12:18 p.m. Someone used a razor blade to cut along the outside of a bedroom window screen, but the homeowner reported nothing missing.

Tuesday, May 19

Vandalism. 200 block of Wave St. 8:25 p.m. Someone smashed a car window.

Vehicle burglary. 1000 block of Catalina St. 9 a.m. The owner of a vehicle left unlocked found tools missing and contents extracted from the vehicle.

Burglary. 100 block of Crescent Bay Dr. 2:48 p.m. Sixteen cell batteries worth $6,400 were stolen from a locked electrical box, mirroring a similar incident in town.

Wednesday, May 20

Suspicious person. S. Coast Hwy. 9 a.m. In response to a report of a man fingerpainting with the blood of a dead pigeon, police found a 43-year-old man drawing on a bench with yellow crayon and issued a vandalism citation.

Stolen vehicle. 1100 block of Laguna Canyon Rd. 3 p.m. A stolen utility trailer was discovered in Anaheim.

Grand theft. 30800 block of Coast Hwy. 5:56 p.m. Staff could not find a $4,000 bracelet removed by a patron for a facial and massage, who returned after realizing she had left the jewelry behind.

Thursday, May 21

Vehicle burglary. 400 block o f Oak St. 6:30 a.m. A thief that smashed a window took a canvas bag, wallet, passport and credit cards overnight.

Battery. 500 block of Forest Ave. 8 a.m. Derek Sean Acevedo, 46, of Los Angeles, was cited for battery after he allegedly tried to kick officers called by hospital staff to subdue his combative behavior. He was originally arrested for public intoxication.

Battery. 20600 Laguna Canyon Rd. 11:39 p.m. Leslie Shackett, 53, of Laguan Beach, was arrested for suspicion of misdemeanor battery and felony witness intimidation after an argument.

Friday, May 22

Traffic stop. 500 block of Forest Ave. 12:50 a.m. A 25-year-old man from Fountain Hills, Ariz., was cited for DUI.

Sleeper. 300 Cliff Dr. 5:30 a.m. Joseph Jeffrey Noon, 61, of Laguna Beach, was cited for three Madera County warrants.

Drunk driving. 500 block of Glenneyre St. 9:04 p.m. A 17-year-old girl from Rancho Santa Margarita was arrested for DUI after she was seen stumbling from a restaurant where she was refused service.

Pedestrian stop. Forest Ave. 10:52 p.m. Alberto Alejandro Linares, 25, of Laguna Beach, was arrested for four warrants.

Saturday, May 23

Traffic stop. Third Street. 2:32 a.m. A 20-year-old Laguna Beach woman was cited for DUI.

Traffic stop. Calliope. 2:38 a.m. A 54-year-old San Clemente woman was cited for DUI.

Vandalism. Mountain Road. 10:36 a.m. A girlfriend is suspected in stuffing ice plants in a car gas tank and flattening a tire.

Defraud innkeeper. 300 block of S. Coast Hwy. 12:44 p.m. Peter Norman Walker, 49, of Laguna Beach, was arrested for an outstanding Colorado stalking warrant after police questioned him in the suspected theft from a restaurant.

Fraud. 30800 block of Coast Hwy. 4:49 p.m. Two guests charged $1,500 in merchandise to their room to a credit card that declined payment. The guests fled before police arrived.

Welfare check. 800 block of N. Coast Hwy. A report about a man on the ground led to the arrest of Isaac Benjamin Luz, 35, of Orange, for three warrants.

Trespassing. 100 block of McKnight Dr. 7:14 p.m. Two 15-year-old Laguna Beach boys were detained after jumping a fence at a house under construction.

Defraud innkeeper. 1500 block of S. Coast Hwy. 10:50 p.m. Guests ducked $1,303 in room charges three days earlier, and appear to meet the description of those who pulled a similar stunt at another hotel.

Traffic stop. 600 block of Sleepy Hollow Lane. 10:56 p.m. Ramiro Olea, 24, of Lake Forest, was arrested for outstanding vehicle code warrants.

Sunday, May 24

Traffic stop. 200 block of Mountain Rd. 1:15 a.m. A 49-year-old Mission Viejo man was cited for DUI.

Traffic stop. Forest Ave. 2:20 a.m. A 21-year-old Chula Vista woman was cited for drunk driving.

Theft. 3000 block of Bern Dr. 8:44 a.m. A wallet and iPod were stolen from an unlocked car.

Vandalism. Los Olivos. 8:59 a.m. A car window was smashed.

Vehicle burglary. Bluebinrd Canyon. 11:25 a.m. A $1,000 camera was taken after thieves broke a car window.

Grand theft 300 block of Moss St. 4:17 p.m. Thieves made off with $1,200 in miscellaneous items from an unlocked vehicle overnight.

Indecent exposure. 500 block of Glenneyre St. 4:49 p.m. People were reported having sex in a pickup.

Stolen vehicle. 3000 block of Bern Dr. 7:53 p.m. A 2010 Toyota Camry went missing.

Petty theft. 100 block of Moss St. 8:40 p.m. Someone stole an American flag from a flagpole.

Traffic stop. Blue Lagoon. 10:29 p.m. Toni Luana Leech, 63, of Laguna Beach, was arrested for suspicion of DUI and held for $10,000 bail due to a prior offense.

Traffic stop. Blue Lagoon. A 30-year-old Laguna Niguel man was cited for DUI.

Monday, May 25

Medical. 200 block of Ocean Ave. 1 a.m. A victim of a fight who had lost consciousness was taken to the hospital for treatment. The other combatant had fled by the time officers arrived.

Petty theft. 300 block of N. Coast Hwy. 9:54 a.m. A boss has video of an employee stealing cash from a register.

Vehicle burglary. 200 block of Chiquita St. 1:53 pm. A Cannondale bike valued at $2100 stolen from inside car.

Petty theft. 200 block of Beverly St. 2:45 p.m. Four skateboards were stolen from the front entry.
