Federal investigators and detectives from the Beverly, Mass., police department are investigating the disappearance of Chinese jade from a shipment of antique furniture valued at $5 million that left Laguna Beach in December, law enforcement officials said this week.
The load of personal furniture was shipped by a Laguna resident to Boston by truck and consigned to an auction house for sale, said a Beverly detective, who declined to be identified. “He’s just missing a few items, not the whole load,” said the detective, who could not put a value on the missing items alone.
The theft was reported to Beverly authorities on Jan. 15, but an additional report about the theft was filed last week by a resident who lives in the 600 block of Canyon View Dr., Sgt. Tim Kleiser said.
