A 28-year-old man was taken into custody early Sunday, Dec. 14, after leading Laguna Beach police on an 80 mph chase along Coast Highway that led nearly to Costa Mesa, police said.

Anthony Michael Mikuski, of Huntington Beach, was arrested for felony charges of evading a peace officer, reckless driving and driving under the influence after Newport Beach police found him on foot near apartments at Ticonderoga Way. Bail was set at $20,000.

Mikuski passed an officer at a high rate of speed in the 100 block of S. Coast Highway in Laguna Beach about 2:59 a.m., Capt. Jason Kravetz said. The officer pursued the vehicle, which continued to speed, run red lights and cross into opposing lanes, said Kravetz, noting that the officer discontinued the chase at Bayside Drive.

Newport police found Mikuski’s abandoned car at Superior Avenue and Nice Lane with extensive front-end damage and airbags deployed, yet no damaged structures or vehicles were found, Kravetz said.
